This is one of the films I think people absolutely should see. What holds me is Barry’s habit of hiding his awkwardness, his flaws, the parts of himself he finds embarrassing, from the very person he loves. He seems unusual at first. I suspect he resembles people we meet every day. The contradiction is what draws me in: wanting to love someone, and at the same time being reluctant to show them who you really are. For me the film goes beyond romance. It asks a more basic question, about what it means to love.
