Daniel Day-Lewis had announced that this would be his last film, and at the time that alone was a compelling reason to see it. What interests me more is the story itself: a man whose work, habits, and carefully maintained order are disturbed by love. I find the simultaneous presence of unsettling emotion and unexpected humor especially interesting. The film portrays love as something more complicated than beauty or tenderness. Control, obsession, dependence, and transformation all live inside it at once.
