What I admire in this film is its restraint, and the precision with which it expresses emotion. Against the tendency to explain everything, or to present feeling as intensely as possible, Naruse carefully controls how much he reveals. Emotion is allowed to surface at exactly the moments when it is needed. For me the crucial question is not simply what a filmmaker shows, but when, and how much. Showing more does not necessarily mean expressing more deeply.
