I am drawn to the hopeful, captivating way Miyake portrays young adults in contemporary Japan. He acknowledges the uncertainty, anxiety, and aimlessness that can characterize their lives, yet he never reduces his characters to those struggles. What interests me is his fascination with young people themselves, and the way he observes how they live. There is an openness and an affection in his perspective that I find compelling.
